Analysis of the Relationship Between Personality Types and Music Listening Patterns

Research indicates that music listening habits vary depending on an individual’s personality type. Psychology Today published a study conducted by Alessandro Ansani and colleagues from the University of Jyväskylä on July 11, with a review provided by Lybi Ma.

Although music plays a significant role in many people’s lives, there has been little research on how individual personality traits influence music listening behaviors. The research team observed that frequent use of personal audio devices and headphones emphasizes the benefits of private entertainment, while at the same time highlighting a persistent desire to share musical experiences with others. Based on this observation, they decided to analyze how an individual’s personality affects their preferences in music listening.

Music listening patterns show clear differences based on personality type. People with introverted personalities tend to listen to music alone, whereas those with extroverted personalities prefer to share music with others. Individuals with higher levels of neuroticism tend to listen to music by themselves while reflecting on lyrics to comfort themselves during times of sadness.

Another factor examined in the study is cognitive style. People with a social empathy cognitive style prefer interactions with others and enjoy sharing music together. In contrast, those with a systematic cognitive style prefer solitary environments and enjoy listening to music independently.

To measure individual differences in music listening habits, the research team developed a new scale called the Individual and Social Music Listening Scale (ISMUS). Following standard scale development procedures, this scale consists of 9 items and is designed to quantify the relationship between personality types and music listening preferences.

This study suggests that the everyday activity of listening to music is closely linked to an individual’s personality traits. It holds significance because understanding one’s own motivations behind music choices can provide valuable self-insight.
