Netflix Documentary on BTS’s “Arirang” Production Highlights J-Hope’s Proactive Input

With the release of Netflix’s documentary “BTS: THE RETURN” on March 27, attention has turned to the heightened musical leadership demonstrated by BTS during the creation of their fifth studio album, “Arirang.” Directed by Bao Nguyen, the film captures the group’s creative journey as they spent two months in Los Angeles working on the new project.

A particularly notable scene in the documentary features J-Hope offering his opinion at the suggestion of HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk. During discussions about the musical direction for “Arirang,” J-Hope expressed concern that the extensive sound samples were excessive and requested shorter versions. His assertive declaration, “That’s not it,” as he conveyed his musical judgment, was regarded as a moment showcasing the group’s mature artistic sensibility.

Director Bao Nguyen provided BTS members with mini DV camcorders so they could document their own stories when there was no filming crew present. He explained that such videos carry a very personal and intimate feel, similar to those recorded by a father or uncle. This approach enabled the film to capture more genuine moments from the members.

The group’s Leader, RM, reflects in the documentary on the concept of Greek time, particularly “kairos,” which refers to qualitative time when taking the right action at a specific perfect moment has lasting impacts. The film calmly portrays the members navigating the balance between their own desires and the demands of others, including their agency. At times, individual creativity is set aside to accommodate others’ requests, and the members’ frustrations and doubts are also clearly shown in the footage.

“BTS: THE RETURN” mythologically and poetically depicts the journey of the seven-member band returning with a new release after completing three years and nine months of military service. Fans are closely analyzing the film, showing a keen interest in deeply understanding BTS’s growth and inner experiences.
