What does “idol” mean in K-POP? It refers to an ideal archetype, a person with a perfect appearance. These individuals are portrayed as beautiful and versatile stars, fundamentally different from Western pop stars. While Western stars are often recognized as experts in specific fields, K-POP idols are expected to “do it all.” Having the dance skills to handle complex choreography is a basic requirement. Even with the advancement of modern auto-tune technology, vocal talent is still demanded, along with proficiency in foreign languages, media behavior skills, and a polished celebrity persona.

Physical appearance is also crucial. Advanced technology has made it possible to select candidates with outstanding looks even if they lack dance skills. As a result, K-POP idols are expected to meet “every single requirement.”

The training system designed to achieve this level of perfection is extremely harsh. Young aspirants who dream of entering the industry live together in company-owned dormitories. Training from morning till late at night is the norm. Not only are stage performance skills practiced, but they also receive instruction in foreign languages, media behavior, and celebrity personas. This process is said to demand “absolute obedience” within the group rather than individual autonomy. Behind the label of “the most sophisticated pop machine in the world” lies such structural control.
