Elizabeth Banks Developing K-POP Spinoff Series ‘Pitch Perfect: K-Pop Idols’ for Peacock

Brownstone Productions, led by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman, is developing a comedy series titled ‘Pitch Perfect: K-Pop Idols’ for Peacock through a new partnership with Universal Television. The series will be written by Joel Kim Booster, creator of ‘Fire Island,’ and focuses on “a struggling singer-songwriter whose life takes a dramatic turn when she auditions to join the first all-American K-POP group.” Booster, Banks, and Handelman will serve as executive producers, alongside Paul Brooks and Scott Niemeyer from Gold Circle Films and Jason Moore, the director of the ‘Pitch Perfect’ films. Moore is also set to direct this series adaptation. Brownstone Productions has a proven track record of success with the ‘Pitch Perfect’ film franchise, which has generated over $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue. Banks appeared in all three movies and directed ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ herself. The company was also behind ‘Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin,’ a series that aired on Peacock in 2022. Although Season 2 of ‘Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin’ was canceled in 2023 due to writer and actor strikes, this new K-POP spinoff represents another expansion of the franchise. Erin Underhill, president of Universal Television, said in a statement, “Elizabeth is someone with a unique creative talent both behind and in front of the camera. She, Max, and the Brownstone team have long been part of the NBCUniversal family, and we look forward to them using Universal Television as their creative home.” Booster expressed his gratitude on his Instagram Story by writing, “thank you mommy @elizabethbanks and daddy @maxhandelman for giving me the keys to the castle!!” Under the deal with Universal Television, Brownstone is also developing another project titled ‘Crush.’ Inspired by an episode of ‘The Jenny Jones Show’ from 1995 titled “Revealing Same-Sex Secret Crushes,” this series will be a dark comedy that “weaves together stories of ambition, heartbreak, and murder set in the chaotic world of tabloid talk shows.”
