BABYMONSTER, NMIXX, ITZY, and LE SSERAFIM to Make Simultaneous Comebacks in May

The K-pop music scene is set to heat up more than ever this May. The core girl groups from the four major entertainment companies will release new songs simultaneously throughout the month, competing head-to-head for the title of “May Queen.”

BABYMONSTER will be the first to release their third mini-album, “Choom,” on May 4. This marks their first new release in about 6 months since their mini-album “We Go Up” in October. The album, which contains 4 tracks, is centered around high-energy Title Track songs. Yang Hyun-suk, chairman of YG Entertainment, described this album as “something different from everything they’ve done before.” BABYMONSTER will showcase a variety of genres such as hip-hop and R&B through this album to demonstrate the group’s musical versatility. The Title Track is characterized by its intense beats and highly complex choreography.

NMIXX will return on May 11 with their fifth mini-album, “Heavy Serenade.” This is their first new release in about 7 months since the successful release of their first full-album, “Blue Valentine.” The Title Track features singer-songwriter Hanro-ro, while members Lily and Bae contributed to the lyrics for “Crescendo,” “Loud,” and “Different Girl.” The members’ involvement in songwriting is expanding increasingly.

ITZY, also under JYP Entertainment, will release their twelfth mini-album, “Motto,” on May 18. This marks their first new release in about 6 months. Notably, this album includes solo tracks for each member. A side track titled “That’s a No No,” released in 2020, was performed again during ITZY’s “Tunnel Vision” world tour concert in Sydney. This song from 6 years ago received strong audience response by overcoming time constraints.

LE SSERAFIM will release their second full-album, “Pureflow pt. 1,” on May 22, marking their first new music release in about 3 years since a full-album release. They had previously planned to release a track titled “Celebration.” Source Music explained that this album continues the group’s narrative of growth.

The girl group comebacks this May are expected to go beyond simply releasing new songs, serving as opportunities to showcase each group’s musical evolution. BABYMONSTER will pursue a strategy of exploring new genres, NMIXX will expand member involvement in song creation, ITZY will reinterpret older songs, and LE SSERAFIM will return with a full-album release.
