Ahn Hyo Seop Reveals Failed Debut as JYP Trainee: “It Was the Worst Moment of My Life”

Actor Ahn Hyo Seop reflected on his time as a trainee at JYP Entertainment. Though now recognized as a leading figure in Korean dramas, he once dreamed of becoming a K-POP idol. More recently, Ahn Hyo Seop has also been active as a voice actor for *KPop Demon Hunters*, and he shared details about that challenging period in his career.

On the 26th, in a video uploaded to the YouTube channel “Yojung Jaehyung,” Ahn Hyo Seop calmly explained his past. He had moved to Korea after receiving an audition offer from JYP Entertainment while living in Canada. Ahn Hyo Seop said, “The company reached out to me first,” adding that it seemed they had looked around his high school for suitable candidates since there were quite a few Asians there. At the time, Ahn Hyo Seop viewed entering the K-POP system as an unknown adventure and began training with excitement.

However, reality differed from his expectations. The intense and repetitive training caused Ahn Hyo Seop’s attitude toward music to change. He recalled, “I really loved music, but after practicing repeatedly, I thought I might start to hate it.” His admission that he wanted to keep music as a hobby revealed signs of burnout from the training process.

Ultimately, Ahn Hyo Seop failed to debut. The pain from that moment was profound. He confessed, “I walked endlessly down the road behind Galleria Department Store before calling my parents. For the first time, I cried and said, ‘I’m sorry, Father.’ I felt guilty for sending them away trusting in me.” He also admitted his own failure. “Of course, I didn’t debut, so it meant I lacked enough skill. But to be honest, even if I were in their position, I think they would have rejected me too,” he said calmly. He rated his singing as having room for improvement but admitted his dancing was “really poor.”

Afterward, Ahn Hyo Seop turned to acting, which changed the course of his life. Yet the trauma lingered for a long time. For 4 to 5 years after failing to debut, Ahn Hyo Seop disliked talking about it because he still felt guilt and disappointment. But as time passed, his perspective changed. He said, “Looking back now, it was a truly valuable experience. I can talk about it freely now.”

Today, Ahn Hyo Seop is regarded as a master of Korean dramas and a versatile actor who excels in videos, films, and voice acting. His journey demonstrates that even the most successful lives can stem from moments of failure.
