Actor Ahn Hyo-seop to Provide Voice Acting for Netflix’s Global Animated Film “KPop Demon Hunters”

Ahn Hyo-seop will supply the English voice acting for the protagonist in Netflix’s global animated film “KPop Demon Hunters.” His agency, The Present Company, announced this news on April 25. “KPop Demon Hunters” is a hybrid action-musical animation that follows members of globally popular K-POP girl groups as they hunt demons outside of the stage and navigate the challenges that arise. It is praised as a work that balances stunning visuals, emotional depth, and supernatural thrills, using K-POP as a cultural framework to address the uncertain identity and emotional balance of today’s generation. Ahn Hyo-seop portrays Jin-woo, a boy group leader who is also a strong and charismatic male protagonist, delivering all of his lines in English. Through this role, he undertakes a sophisticated acting challenge that requires conveying subtle emotional nuances solely through voice. This film is produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind global hits such as “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and is directed by Korean-American director Maggie Kang alongside Chris Appelhans from “Wish Dragon,” ensuring a blend of Korean cultural identity and a global perspective. Other Korean actors including Lee Byung-hun and Kim Yoon-jin are also involved, though their specific roles have not yet been revealed. The industry views this project as an example of “K-culturalization” rather than the “globalization of K-content,” representing a significant endeavor born at a time when Asian creators, Korean actors, and K-POP as a cultural asset are taking center stage in global popular culture. “KPop Demon Hunters” is scheduled to be released simultaneously in 190 countries worldwide on Netflix on June 20. Meanwhile, Ahn Hyo-seop has recently completed filming for the film “The Reader,” starring as the lead character Kim Dok-ja, which is set to premiere in July.
