'Wild Thing': Kang Dong-won, Uhm Tae-gu, and Park Ji-hyun Team Up for a Comedy About a Reunited Trio of Idols

The film "Wild Thing" is a wild comedy that depicts the events surrounding the 20-year reunion of the once-popular three-member mixed-gender dance group "Triangle," who dominated the K-pop industry. Directed by Son Jae-gon, it stars Kang Dong-won, Uhm Tae-gu, Park Ji-hyun, and Oh Jung-se.

The movie follows Leader Hwang Hyun-woo (Kang Dong-won), who became a struggling entertainer, Byun Do-mi (Park Ji-hyun), who turned into a daughter-in-law of a chaebol family, Gu Sang-gu (Uhm Tae-gu), who piled up debts after failing as a solo artist, and Seong Gon (Oh Jung-se), a former rival balladeer, as they come together one last time for a performance. However, the journey toward the concert takes an unexpected turn when their former agency representative, tied to past conflicts, appears on the scene.

The actors put in extensive effort to bring their characters to life. Kang Dong-won practiced breakdancing for five months to prepare for this role. He explained his decision by saying, "I knew almost nothing about hip-hop before, but I thought it would be entertaining for audiences to see me spinning with my head on the ground."

Uhm Tae-gu trained in rap for five months at JYP Entertainment to perfect his rapper character. He said, "A rap teacher was there, so I went there. I entered a private room and practiced hard." Park Ji-hyun stated, "The script was very interesting, and I was drawn to it because of the director’s 2010 film 'The Villainess and the Widow.'"

Director Son Jae-gon revealed that he conducted extensive research on singers from the 1990s and 2000s during film production. He clarified that the story was developed within a fictional setting, not based on real events. This marks his return to directing after approximately six years, following his debut with "Sweet, Deadly Lovers" in 2006 and his direction of "Don’t Hurt Her" in 2020.

"Wild Thing" is 107 minutes long, rated for viewers aged 12 and above, and is distributed by Lotte Entertainment. It will open in theaters on June 3.
