Akdong Musician & Gaeul Leave YG After 12 Years to Form Independent Label “Spring of Inspiration”

The sibling duo Akdong Musician revealed the reasons behind their departure from YG Entertainment, where they had been active for 12 years, to establish their independent label “Spring of Inspiration.” On the 13th, Lee Chanhyuk and Lee Suhyun appeared on the YouTube channel “Chimchakman’s Special Seat” and emphasized that their move was a “beautiful graduation,” not betrayal.

Lee Chanhyuk began with the concise answer that “the time had come” before explaining the specific circumstances. He said, “I learned a great deal during our previous contract renewal period, but as my own production capabilities expanded, my musical style became more distinct. As the details of what I wanted became clearer, a divergence emerged between the company’s direction and my musical vision.”

Notably, the relationship between the two members and YG is based on mutual understanding rather than a breakup. Lee Chanhyuk stated, “The company also encouraged us by saying, ‘Akdong Musician will likely do well on their own now,’” stressing that this was the complete opposite of betrayal. He added, “We are now confident that we can fully realize what we desire.”

Akdong Musician ended their exclusive contract with YG in November last year and founded their independent label thereafter. The name “Spring of Inspiration” is also the title of exhibitions held by Lee Chanhyuk in 2023 and 2025. The two members released their fourth studio album, “Kaihwa,” on the 7th, and the album has topped various music charts, demonstrating strong support from fans.

Since releasing “Still Life” in 2022, Akdong Musician had not produced any new songs as the group, making this fourth album expected to showcase their musical maturity after going independent. Given Lee Chanhyuk’s public emphasis on expanded production skills and greater musical freedom, fans are highly anticipating their musical activities ahead.
